The (psycho-)socio-aesthetic is a companion craft therapeutic, who practices cosmetic care and touch body massage as mediation tool and supportive care in a multidisciplinary framework, in the heart of a care project the medico-social sector.
By supporting the person to become an actor of their own well-being, the objective of the job is to enhance self-image and self-esteem, by encouraging speaking by expressing their feelings and by working on the disadaptation or the handicap of the appearance.
Socio-aesthetics was born in England in 1960, in oncology and psychiatry services and the first socio-esthetician appeared in San Francisco in a psychiatric center in 1962. Two years later, a volunteer esthetician intervened in the hospital. Le Vinatier psychiatric ward in Lyon .
Jenny Lascare founded in 1973 the AEVH, Association of estheticians with a hospital vocation, establishing the first beauty center at the CHS de Bron in Lyon. In 1976, the first aesthetics school with a humanitarian and social option was created at the Tours hospital center : CODES.
The CEW Cosmetic Executiv Women association, by women responsible for the beauty industries, set up beauty centers in hospitals in 1992. In 2003, supportive care was born by measure 42 of the cancer plan , socio-aesthetics is one of them.
The National Union of Socio-Estheticians is working from 2006 to 2008 on a new training aimed at professionalization, elaboration of the program and the repository of (psycho-)socio-aesthetic training. In 2008 two pilot schools of (psycho-)socio-aesthetics were created, in Nanterre and Pau . The union obtains the validation by the Ministry of Health of the job description of socio-esthetician with recognition of the terminology "(psycho-)socio-esthetic", as another name of socio-esthetic.
The SNSE became SNPSE, National Union of Professionals in Socio-Aesthetics, in 2011 and the following year was created the association ANPSE, National Association of (Psycho)-Socio-Aesthetists (nes), by professionals in (psycho)-socio-Aesthetics.
Definition of the profession
(Psycho-)socio-aesthetics (PSE) is a profession which takes into account the person in a multi-objective way (bio-psycho-social-aesthetics) to work on the disadaptation or the handicap of appearance.
It implements rehabilitation, reintegration and (psycho-)social rehabilitation care activities: through individual care, group care and always in the context of transdisciplinary care.
After a CAP in aesthetics, it is necessary to follow a specialized training at a school certified by the National Union of professionals in socio-aesthetics.
The purpose of this job is to actively participate in the well-being of patients in order to promote a state of health that meets that adopted by the World Health Organization in 1946: "Health is defined as being a state of complete well-being." to be physical, mental and social, and does not consist solely in the absence of illness or infirmity ” 2 .
The PES professional applies relational care, he welcomes the word with kindness and empathy for a relationship of trust and communication in the global approach of the patient.
He establishes a PES diagnosis, and designs his intervention project.
The notion of (psycho-)socio-aesthetics is based on the work of Didier Anzieu, Le Moi-peau .
Job description within the public service
(psycho-)socio-aesthetics is a recognized profession in the hospital public service and is part of the care family (profession code 05R20, ROME code 11133) 3 .

The ******-SocioEsthetician has been also known to carry out suitable socio-aesthetic care, relational touch, applied personal hygiene and care focused on the appearance of the person with the aim of enhancing self-image and promoting identity repair contributing to the registration of the person in his environment.
